A TYCROES electrician is set to see his dream of competing in the British Bodybuilding final come true thanks to his best pal and an enormous amount of community spirit.

Phillip Evans of Hendre Road, recently took part in the UK British Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (UKBFF) Welsh Championships under 90kg class and came second, earning him entry into the UKBFF British finals in Nottingham on October 12.

However, the cost of getting to the final doesn’t come cheap. With supplementation and food costs leading up to the show, plus travel and accommodation, Phillip wasn’t sure he would even be able to make it.

Close pal Andrew Sparrow, who has been by Phillip’s side throughout his journey felt he needed to do something to help his old school friend.

“I’ve been with Phil from the beginning and saw the hard work and dedication he has put in to get this far, I wasn’t prepared to let anything get in his way,” said Andrew.

Thanks to Andrew and the support from local businesses, Phillip has gained enough sponsorship to cover the costs to get him on the road to the final.

“I’m so grateful to Andrew and everyone who has sponsored me, it has relieved me of an enormous amount of pressure and means I can now concentrate on getting myself fit for the finals,” said Phillip.

Phillip started competing as a strongman in 2007 when he won the Welsh Strength Association (WSA) Powerlifting championships.

The 31-year-old has gone on to compete in a number of championships including the UK Strongest Man. However following injuries, Phillip decided to switch over to bodybuilding.

“I’ve been training since I was 18 years old,” said Phillip.

“Andrew and I would work out together; it’s always been something I’ve felt passionate about.”

Phillip, who owns PR Evans Electrical, has even been approached by Cafe Pentre, of Llandybie, with an offer of all the chicken he needs – a must for a bodybuilders diet – over the next few weeks.

“Andrew has had so many people approaching him since he started seeking sponsorship, I’ve even been offered to have my teeth whitened,” said Phillip.

“Now the burden of costs has been taken away I’m set to put all my energy into getting fit and healthy for the competition, to hopefully make everyone proud.

“I’ve also got a fantastic nutritionist from Cardiff – Mark Robinson – who gives me great advice.

“I’m aware it’s the British finals and competition is going to be high, but I’ll be going in with the attitude to win - but if I come away with a top ten I’ll be chuffed to bits.”

Phillip would like to say a massive thank you to the following businesses for sponsoring his trip to Nottingham - Review Bureau, Thomson Legal, Penygroes Service Centre, JT Supplements, Pinnacle Renewables, The Financial Bureau, Insure 4 Less, Cafe Pentre and Pearly Whites & Co.

“A special thank you has to go to Andrew, who has helped me along in this incredible journey,” added Phillip.
