GREAT British Bake Off’s Beca Lyne-Pirkis visits Llandybie on a trip down memory lane in the next episode of S4C’s Becws, on Thursday, October 2.

The show introduces Bec'a family and unlocks a store of memories, including one of the recipes which represents her childhood - her grandmother’s apple dumplings.

"I have very fond memories of Mam-gu's cooking when I was a young girl," said Beca. "Unfortunately, she is no longer with us but I remember everything she taught me.

"Cooking was how Mam-gu bonded with me and my brother Gareth.

"Since we were the youngest of the cousins, she'd already looked after several grandchildren before us, and as an older grandmother, baking was something she could do with us all.

"She would look after us while Mam and Dad were at work and she taught us how to make things like bread and cawl, and one of our favourites was apple dumplings."

Now, Beca's Aunty Heulwen is the chief dumpling-maker in the family, and she shows how to make the family favourite from her home in Llandybie.

It is obvious that cooking runs in the family with Aunty Heulwen and cousin Doreen starring in the kitchen.

"I fell in love with cooking when I was very young, and I haven't looked back since," said Beca. "I think it's extremely important to teach cookery to the next generation."

During the TV show Beca takes in the skills of young cooks at Ysgol Bro Dinefwr, where Doreen is a teacher, and joins them as they put their own stamp on some Bara Brith.

Banoffee Bara Brith is Beca's personal twist on the classic Welsh fruit loaf.

Among the other treats to devour are Custard Tartlets, a favourite of Beca's father. And, in exchange for a dozen fresh free-range eggs, Beca prepares lunch for cousin Terry – baked eggs with pancetta, mushrooms and tomatoes.

If you want to bake like Beca, all the recipes are available on the s4c.co.uk/becws website. Becws is on Thursday, October 2 at 8.25pm.
