Tenovus, Wales’ leading cancer charity, is working in partnership with Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board to launch a new nurse-led service to support cancer patients receiving treatment at the South West Wales cancer centre – Singleton Hospital.

The service, Tenovus Cancer Callback, will offer cancer patients in the area a series of regular calls from an experienced nurse. The service will offer a dedicated nurse for the duration of their treatment, who will support them every step of the way.

Patients can spend as long as they want on the phone and the nurses will be there to answer all their questions about cancer, no matter how small. The nurses will also be able to direct patients to other support offered by Tenovus, such as counselling services and welfare and benefits advice.

The service is available for patients who receive treatment through Singleton Hospital’s Chemotherapy Day Unit. Last year Tenovus’ Freephone Cancer Support Line handled 8,800 calls to or from people affected by cancer.

Rhiannon Skilton, Tenovus Cancer Support Services Manager, said: “This is a really important service for patients receiving their cancer treatment at Singleton Hospital.

“We know that having a dedicated nurse who can answer questions and offer advice is a source of enormous comfort and support, at what can be a very difficult and uncertain time.

“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board to provide this service for the people of Swansea and the surrounding areas.”

Sue Rowland, Chemotherapy Day Unit Manager said: “This is an exciting new service and we are proud to be working in partnership with Tenovus to provide a vital support service for the patients receiving chemotherapy within the South West Wales Cancer Centre at Singleton Hospital.

“This is a very stressful time for patients and their families and any extra support we can offer is crucial to assisting and supporting them through their treatment.”
