WELSH Government leader Carwyn Jones has paid tribute to retiring AM Gwenda Thomas.

Mrs Thomas, who has been AM for Neath since the original National Assembly elections back in 1999, last week announced her intention not to stand for re-election next May.

“It’s hard to think of anyone who has had more influence on the social services agenda in Wales, as well as being a passionate advocate for the rights of carers and children,” said Mr Jones.

“The legislation which she took through the National Assembly during her time as a Minister will be a lasting legacy. I have always valued her advice, friendship and loyalty to the Government during her time as the elected member for Neath.

“I have no doubt that Gwenda will continue to champion those causes closest to her heart in the future.”

Mrs Thomas, who served as Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services between 2007 and 2014 said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as the first Assembly member for Neath and to be part of the Welsh Government under two First Ministers.

“When I stood for my first election, to my local community council, 35 years ago, I never dreamt that I would have these opportunities.

“I want to thank everyone who has supported me, and worked with me, along the way. I think we can be proud of what we have achieved. I hope the Social Services and Well-being Act will leave a lasting effect.”

She added: “It has been a privilege to be part of Wales’ political journey, but most of all, I am happy to have had the chance to work for communities I love and call home.”
