AN AMMAN Valley schoolgirl has braved the scissors and had 10 inches of her hair cut for a charity that makes wigs for children affected by cancer.

Katie Poole from Glanaman was inspired to donate her hair after her five-year-old sister Hannah was diagnosed with type two leukaemia two years ago.

Mum Katrina said Katie came up with the idea after her sister started treatment at Cardiff's Heath Hospital and wanted to donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust - a charity that makes wigs for children affected by cancer.

Last Saturday - exactly two years since Hannah started her treatment - 11-year-old Katie had her long locks chopped off at Identity hair salon in Gwaun cae Gurwen.

Salon owner Kaylee was keen to offer her support after her cousin underwent similar treatment.

"It is a fantastic thing Katie has done and I am happy to help her raise money for a fantastic cause," said Kaylee.

Before undergoing the chop Katie said she was looking forward to finally getting her hair cut.

"I've been growing it for so long now, I can't wait to have it cut off," said an excited Katie.

The hair will be sent off to the Little Princess Trust, who need around five different hair donations to make just one wig.

The Ysgol y Bedol pupil has not just donated her hair but has also been raising sponsorship money for Latch the children's cancer charity, who has been helping Hannah as she undergoes her treatment.

Katrina said, "I am so proud of Katie. We as a family are always keen to support Latch as they have been so helpful to us."

So far the Poole family have already donated more than £1,000 for Latch through a sponsored Lantern walk earlier this year and are hoping to raise a further £1,000 through sponsorship for Katie.

Whilst some girls would cry at the thought of getting 10 inches of hair cut, a smiling Katie held her pigtails and said she loved her new style.

"It feels so much lighter. I am happy to see that my hair will be going to a good cause."
