A BID to create a 'culinary, cultural and shopping destination' on the site of Llandeilo’s derelict Market Hall has been revealed in a planning application submitted to Carmarthenshire Council.

Owners Dawnus Construction Holdings Ltd have submitted an ambitious scheme to see the Carmarthen Street hall completely refurbished, extended and altered to build a brand new community venue creating jobs, helping bring a cash boost to the town and attracting lucrative tourists.

With plans for 'unique dining venue', shopping opportunities and office space alongside an indoor venue suitable for shows and events, Dawnus’ scheme will attempt to preserving it’s the listed building’s heritage and create an economic and employment boost for the town

The planning scheme, submitted last week seeks full planning and listed building consent for alterations, refurbishment and extension, plus the of redundant structures at the main market hall - which was built in 1838.

Also included are plans for external seating areas, raised decking areas and a delivery lay-by and car parking.

A further application seeks conservation area consent for the demolition of redundant structures.

A report to council, prepared by agents Pembroke Design Ltd, states the scheme has been developed collaboratively between Dawnus and Carmarthenshire County Council.

The report states that without investment the building would fall further into disrepair: “The building is a shadow of its former self when, in its heyday, it was a hub for the public and traders alike.

“There is now a tremendous opportunity, through private and Heritage Lottery Investment, and with the support of Carmarthenshire County Council and Cadw, to make the building a thriving and vibrant focal point once again, reinvigorating not only this part of town, but Llandeilo as a whole by making it a culinary, cultural and shopping ‘destination’, supported by much needed small business accommodation.”

The report adds that there was proven demand for a market for the town and that the restored Market Hall would provide Llandeilo with a new, permanent commercial space for local traders.

The proposed 227 metre squared restaurant development would offer “a unique fine dining experience” in the town offering outstanding views across Llandeilo and the Brecon Beacons. Office space would run to around 163metres squared.

The report adds that Dawnus, who’s managing director Bob Jones is a Llandeilo resident, has been consulting with a community group throughout the process and that they would continue consulting with the local community during the remaining design development.

It is planned to hold a number of drop in sessions where the public will be able to discuss views with the project team, and make contact details public to allow them to provide feedback on the proposals.
