A TYCROES school has been chosen out of thousands of other schools to get involved in a technological scheme which could see pupils become the next media mastermind.

Ysgol Tycroes have welcomed an after school club project which enables pupils to learn through a different medium called Code Club, which aims to give every child the opportunity to learn by code

Code Club was founded in 2012, and works with a network of volunteer-led after school clubs by providing project materials and a volunteering framework to support clubs in 80 countries around the world.

The scheme aims to provide children aged nine to 11 with an outlet to build and share their ideas, so they can engage actively in creating technology rather than just being passive consumers.

The organisation has helped to teach over 75,000 children through Code Clubs across the country in schools, libraries and community centres to Aberdeen to Truro. Just 50 clubs from the UK wide network of over 4000 have been chosen to be Star Clubs, including Ysgol Tycroes.

To help recruit volunteers to the network, Code Club have creased network ‘Star Clubs’ committed to the best clubs that they can be ready to welcome visitors who want to know more about getting involved as a volunteer.

As a ‘Star Club’, Ysgol Tycroes extend a warm welcome to potential volunteers and other schools to visit and give them a taste of what running a Code Club is like. They can then go on to volunteer at other local venues to help more children have the opportunity to learn to make games, websites and animations using code.

Star Club at Ysgol Tycroes runs every Thursday and 16 pupils have been getting to grips with programming with Stratch, with the assistance of dedicated member of staff, Mr Rob Randel.

Year 6 teacher, Rob Randel, said: “Using the Code Club resources has been amazing to see how quick children understand the concept of coding. And who know, any one of our Code Club pupils could go on to be the next Mark Zuckerberg.”
