A POPULAR train operating company has praised volunteers in Ammanford for their consistent hard work looking after the unmanned train stations in the area.

As part of National Volunteers Week, which runs from June 1 to June 12, Arriva Trains Wales is highlighting the outstanding contribution made by local volunteers taking part in their Adopt a Station scheme at Pantyffynnon and Ammanford train stations.

The scheme was set up by Arriva Trains Wales in 2004 to improve links with local communities and customers living near unstaffed railway stations by encouraging members of the public to provide regular feedback on the conditions of the stations.

The ‘station adopters’ report on matters such as litter, graffiti, vandalism, lighting and timetable information in a survey form for the local Station Manager. Any issues brought up with the volunteers are then dealt with by Arriva.

Clive Barnes joined the Adopt a Station scheme in 2013 as part of Ammanford Lions Club, and over the last few years he has helped oversee dramatic improvements to both Pantyffynnon and Ammanford stations as a result of the scheme.

Volunteer Clive said: “I am delighted to have been a part of the adoption of these stations for the last few years. The scheme is a great way of bringing the community together and our close relationship with Arriva and the work we do on the ground ensures that they always makes a good first impression to visitors and encourage passengers to visit the area.

“We tend to the general upkeep of the station, which includes bedding in plants, creating floral displays and painting railing and cycle stands. The adoption has and continues to be a great team effort and we are thankful to Arriva for giving us the opportunity to take such an active role in their running and appearance.”

The adoption of Pantyffynnon & Ammanford Stations follows successful partnerships with other individuals and local groups who have adopted stations. To date over 120 of Arriva Trains Wales’ 190 unstaffed stations have been taken on by community-spirited volunteers. To recognise their contribution, the adopters receive an annual issue of rail travel vouchers.

Community Relations Manager at Arriva Trains Wales, Geraint Morgan, said: “Our volunteers have made a significant contribution to the day to day operations at Pantyffynnon & Ammanford Stations.
