WORK to improve sporting facilities at an Amman Valley school and leisure centre has been progressing well, with part being completed.

Carmarthenshire County Council has been investing into the Amman Valley Leisure Centre and Ysgol Dyffryn Aman facilities, and has completed work to resurface the 2G hockey and football floodlit all-weather pitch.

This resurfacing was done with a combination of school, local authority and external funding that came to more than £300,000.

The work to resurface the pitch is the second of three phases in the project to improve the facilities, after a £500,000 investment into a major refurbishment of the changing facilities, creating a modern changing village to serve wet and dry side activities.

Currently, the council is working on creating a new 3G rugby and football all-weather pitch and six-lane synthetic running track as part of the final phase of work.

Cllr Gareth John, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration, leisure, culture and tourism, said: “Delivering a new 3G sports pitch at Ammanford along with developing a strategy and assessing the need for all-weather pitches across the county are two objectives set out within the council’s cabinet vision statement.

“I’m therefore delighted to see these developments being realised ensuring first-class sports facilities for the whole of the Amman Valley.

“This is a further significant investment by Carmarthenshire County Council into the leisure centre and school and I am very much looking forward to seeing these additional outstanding facilities being delivered to the communities of the Amman Valley later this year.

“This investment in the Amman Valley is all-important in developing the council’s sport for all approach to support a broad range of participation in sports, from beginners to elite.”

The final phase of the project to complete the 3G pitch, surrounded by the synthetic athletics track is set to cost £2million and is due for completion later this year.
