Welsh League Division Two

Ammanford 0 Chepstow Town 0

Ammanford were held to a stalemate against Chepstow Town at the Recreational Ground as they gained another crucial point in their survival bid, writes Nick Davies.

The likely relegation of Afan Lido from the Welsh Premier League maikes for the possibly of four sides falling out of League Two as the game's administrators reshuffle the pack and leaves Ammanford in a two-horse race with Dinas Powys to avoid the drop.

A 0-0 draw against the league’s form team is no mean feat and it was a game the home side will have been disappointed not to have won as only the strong Chepstow defence kept them at bay.

The visitors started strongly and saw a back post header looping onto the crossbar and over only five minutes into the match.

They were able to limit the hosts’ chances during the early stages and carved out another decent opportunity when a well-struck effort fizzed just wide of the post.

However, Ammanford sprung to life late on in the half with Chris Hyde racing down the wing before passing waywardly across the box.

The hosts’ new-found energy just before the interval continued into the second half as Owen James skipped past his marker into the box only to shoot wide of the post three minutes into the second half when one-on-one with the keeper.

Chepstow thought they had scored when a nice move by the visitors enabled them to have a shot on goal, only for Jamie Rano to save the ball with his legs by sitting on it.

Ammanford looked dangerous on the counter and launched themselves forward with Hyde’s back post cross being sent back across goal dangerously before being cleared away.

Luke Fayres had the best chance of the game when a ball played across the face fell neatly into his path only for him to spurn the opportunity.

James felt he should have been awarded a penalty late on when two players Cheptstow defenders came together to bar his way.

The referee however saw no issue with the challenge and waved away his appeals.

There was still time for keeper Rano to pull off a smart save when Chepstow broke through one-on-one and secure the point.
