With an eye on maintaining the Carmarthenshire Warriors' success into their 15th season and beyond, Arwel Davies selected an exciting young squad to contest the inaugural Swindon 7s at the weekend.

The Warriors opened proceedings with a resounding 52-7 victory against a Combined Universities side. Carmarthen brothers Jack and Scott Maynard were prominent in the first two games, Jack controlling the opener while Scott featured in the second game for the wrong reasons, getting a yellow card after a fracas with the Silverback Baabaas.

Despite this, the Warriors ran out 17-14 victors and progressed to the quarter finals.

Eventual tournament champions Ponty Butchers awaited, with a strong and well-organised side containing some key Welsh Premiership players, including last season’s top try scorer, Rory Budina.

Despite the Warriors’ lack of experience, being exposed for much of the game against the physicality of the Butchers side, they were only narrowly beaten by one last-minute score to go down 22-27.

Losing quarter finalists progressed into the Plate semi-final with the Warriors looking to avenge their Frome 7s defeat against old friends The Godfathers.

Again experience showed as the Godfathers forced Davies’ youngsters into a number of errors. Tries by Shaun Leonard and Jack Maynard weren’t enough to clinch the tie and the Warriors went down by 17-14.

As ever, Coach Davies was upbeat and drew on the positives from the tournament.

“The Warriors continue to be a springboard for young talent on the Welsh and UK Sevens circuit,” he said.

“We’ve lost narrowly today to some very experienced and well-organised opposition, but cannot complain.

“These youngsters will learn and improve.

“The future of Warriors rugby looks as exciting as ever, as we head into our 15th year.”

Next up for the Warriors will be Aberaeron 7s at the end of August.

Sponsors, supporters and players are urged to contact Arwel Davies or Ian Williams as transport will be provided from Carmarthen on August 24.

Prior to that however, two ladies sides will compete at Beach Rugby Wales on Saturday, July 26.

Keely Evans’ Flamingoes were 2013 champions. However a second side fronted by Whitland’s Natalie Walsh will be looking to help keep the trophy in Carmarthenshire.

The action starts on Swansea beach from 10.30am, again all Warriors and Flamingoes supporters and players will be very welcome.
