Division Three West C
Penygroes 17 Betws 24
Despite a furious fight back in the last 15 minutes of the match, the inexperienced Penygroes team were left still searching for their first win of the new season.
Playing with the benefit of a stiff breeze in the first half, Betws were held scoreless until the 29th minute when they crossed for a try wide out which was brilliantly converted to put them into a 7-0 lead.
The visitors then dominated in the last five minutes of the first half with a further converted try and a penalty to put them into a flattering 17-0 half-time lead.
Betws added a further converted try in the third minute of the second half to move them into a comfortable 24-0 lead.
Penygroes seemed to be a well-beaten side at this point but to their credit, their young side refused to throw in the towel and at last, found some space wide out to score their first try - a brilliant effort from their man of the match No8 Gareth Davies.
Penygroes were now well on top and added further tries from Carwyn Davies and Cerith Evans, one of which was converted, to move them within a score of Betws.
The hosts, now in complete control and reaping the benefit of their obviously superior fitness, continued to hammer away at the visitors line and only some over anxious options prevented a further score.
Penygroes will take heart from their final flourish and move on to Llandadog on October 4 with renewed enthusiasm.
