Division Three West C

Pantyffynon 5 Penygroes 14

A resolute Penygroes performance saw them grind out a much-needed but deserved first win of the season at a windswept Pantyffynon.

Playing against the strong wind in the first half, a combination of superb defence and rapid counter attack saw Penygroes take a deserved lead after 12 minutes with a fine try from scrum-half Nathan Peters. Chris Powell just failed with the conversion attempt.

Penygroes continued to be well in control and wasted several try scoring opportunities through over anxiety and poor options.

They looked well-placed to go into the interval until a series of errors and poor decision-making resulted in a breakaway by Pantyffynon just before whistle which ended in a try wide out for the hosts. Again the conditions ensured the conversion chance was squandered and the sides went into the break at 5-5.

Pantyffynon started strongly in the second half and again only some strong Penygroes defence kept them at bay.

Slowly but surely the young Groes team adjusted to the conditions and centre Powell kicked superbly from hand to put his side well on top.

It seemed only a matter of time before tries resulted and full-back Cerith Evans was held up over the line after a superb line break.

The visitors continued to press and a penalty from Powell on 60 minutes finally broke the deadlock to put Penygroes ahead.

Further penalties saw the visitors edge into a two-score lead which they never looked like giving up.

Groes ultimately claimed a morale-boosting first win of the season.
