Division Two West Central

Pencoed 33 Cwmgors 14

Cwmgors knew they were facing a tough assignment as they travelled to unbeaten and high-flying Pencoed.

It was a credit to the visitors that the home supporters admitted afterwards that the two fixtures against the Cherries had been among their hardest battles of the campaign.

Cwmgors could not have given more in an excellent all-round team performance.

Up against a monster home pack, they held their own for large periods, and, with the luck of the bounce and a few better options taken, could have made the margin far closer.

The home side opened the scoring when awarded a converted penalty try early on, and they soon added a second to open up a 12-0 advantage.

The visitors got a foothold in the game when some good forward play created the platform. As the ball went wide, wing Gavin Madge finished off in the corner and Steff Rees converted, but he was soon to be taken off with a shoulder injury

Pencoed nicked a third try before half-time to extend their lead to 19-7.

The hosts earned their bonus point with a fourth try after the break, but Cwmgors roared back with a sensational try of their own.

Some excellent play from outside-half Lloyd Watson saw him find centre Jordan Davies, whose return saw Watson glide in under the posts. Scrum-half Caron Jones took over the kicking duties and converted.

The Cherries pressed in search of a losing bonus-point, but despite pressure on the home try-line the visitors were unable to penetrate further.

With the inevitable gaps appearing at the back as the Cherries pressed on, they were hit on the breakaway with virtually the last move of the game to concede a fifth.

Cwmgors will be on the road once again on Saturday when they travel to third-placed Maesteg Celtic.
