Division Three West C

Furnace 34 Penygroes 18

A much weakened Penygroes failed in their attempt to secure their seventh successive win at a breezy Furnace ground.

Furnace with the strong breeze at their backs took the lead on 15 minutes thanks to a fine converted try and then increased their lead after 25 minutes with a penalty.

In a fast moving game, Penygroes hit back with a smart try from live-wire flanker Craig Davies which was converted by Chris Powell.

The Groes would have been well pleased to go in at half-time just three points adrift but the hosts managed a breakaway try from a charged-down kick right on half time to secure a 17-7 lead at the interval.

Penygroes reduced the arrears with two early second half penalties to move to within four points of their hosts just 10 minutes into the second half.

Just as it appeared that the visitors were on top, their hopes were hit by an interception try under the posts.

A second breakaway try from Furnace gave them a flattering 27-13 lead but to their credit, the visitors stuck to their task and flanker Davies notched his second score of the match after a superb cross kick from outside-half Leighton Rees.

The Groes continued to press but another break out from the hosts saw them land their fourth try of the match for a bonus-point win.

Penygroes now travel to Betws on January 31 for what is likely to prove a huge match for both sides.
