Division One West

Newcastle Emlyn 53 Amman United 5

Amman United’s recent revival was halted by second in the table Emlyn, who posted a comfortable win in the end.

Amman travelled with a strong-looking squad, but things began to unravel inside five minutes as the hosts, already missing scrum-half Joel Foster – currently in New Zealand, lost replacement Ryan Williams to an early injury. Gavin Lewis switched to scrum half, but he too soon succumbed to injury, and Liam Smith was moved into the inside-half berth.

The constant changes saw United forced to play out the final 20 minutes with only 13 fit players on the pitch.

However, the succession of injuries did litter to the result as Emlyn dominated throughout - bolstered by a significant Carmarthen Athletic contingent.

Emlyn were strong in the backs and often ran their opposition ragged, but Amman’s strong scrummaging held them in good stead throughout.

A bad day at the office saw a few shining lights for the visitors – full-back Rhys Williams gave a good account of himself, while Andy Bevan, brother of Jonny, made a good impact following his second half introduction on the wing.

Amman created a few promising openings, but didn’t really get the rub of the green at times.

The visitors were at least able to grab a consolation try, while down to fourteen men, from a pushover scrum as Number 8 Craig Radcliffe crashed over the whitewash.

Amman will hope to get their recent good form back on track on Saturday when they host Crymych at Cwmamman Park (2.30pm).
