Welsh League Division Three

Ammanford 1

Caerau 0

Ammanford had their resolute defence to thank for a 1-0 midweek win over Caerau on Tuesday night.

The home side started brightly with Mathew Fisher’s freekick and Rhys Owen’s header testing the Caerau goalkeeper inside the opening 15 minutes.

Dayle Selvage had a good opportunity on 17 minutes, but saw his effort from the edge of the area blocked after Fisher squared for the midfielder.

On 29 minutes however, Ammanford took the lead when Ashley Richards’ knocked down a long ball into the path of Fisher inside the area to smash the ball home.

Caerau had a penalty appeal turned down before half-time after Owen appeared to handle inside the area, before James Kirkwood in the Ammanford goal denied the visitors.

After the interval, Caerau dominated.

Ammanford had the first effort however as Mikey Morris’ strike on goal almost fell for Richards, but the striker missed the opportunity to head home as the ball sailed wide.

Kirkwood was on hand to brilliantly tip over a mistimed Owen clearance in his own area as Caerau powered forward. However, the goalkeeper could only watch as another effort just dipped over the bar.

The hosts had a brilliant opportunity to double their lead on the counter, Fisher squared for Craig Frater, but the forward shinned his effort over the bar.

Late on, Caerau threatened and almost equalised when their forward dribbled into the area, but Kirkwood’s diving effort ensured Gruff Harrison’s men gained all three points.
