Welsh League Division Three

Tredegar Town 2 Ammanford 2

Ammanford concluded their promotion-winning campaign with a superb comeback to draw 2-2 away at Tredegar Town as they returned to Division Two of the Welsh League at the first time of asking.

After last summer’s debacle, Ammanford didn’t kick off their season until mid-October so it is remarkable achievement for Gruff Harrison’s men to have overcome a 10-game backlog at the start of the campaign to clinch promotion.

After securing their return in the penultimate game of the season, the visitors started the game on the back foot as they conceded after just 23 seconds when they failed to clear their lines.

The hosts doubled their lead on nine minutes from a corner.

On 16 minutes, James Kirkwood came chasing a ball on the right wing and missed his clearance leaving Tredegar an open goal, but from an acute angle they could only fire against the side-netting.

Ammanford suddenly sprung into life, as Matthew Howell, on his full debut, crossed into the area, handing his side a penalty via a handball. Craig Frater stepped up, but fired high over the bar.

But, the striker made up for his earlier mistake on 40 minutes as he brought down a Dayle Selvage ball into the area and poked under the keeper to make it 2-1 heading into the break.

After the interval, the hosts had the first opportunity when from a long freekick, they rocketed a shot goalward at the back post but Kirkwood brilliantly denied them.

Howell sent Frater through on goal, but from range the forward lobbed over the bar.

Kirkwood then produced a handful of contenders for save of the season in succession when Tredegar sent a barrage of shots at the visiting goalkeeper, but the score remained 2-1.

James Murray sent a volley from the edge of the area just over, but the comeback was complete a minute later when from over 25 yards out, Frater netted his 37th league goal as he fired in a brilliant freekick from the right wing to secure a point for his side.

Ammanford would like to pass on its congratulations to Llanelli and Cwmamman United on also achieving promotion.
