Llandovery played some magnificent rugby to retain their Fosters National Sevens title at Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday overwhelming Pontypridd 45 -7 in the final, writes Huw S Thomas.

They were never troubled in accounting for Carmarthen Quins 31-12, Ebbw Vale 47-0 and Cross Keyes 33-7 in the earlier knockout rounds before ripping Pontypridd apart with a speed and precision that set them apart.

In Will Thomas they had the Player of the Tournament but he was well supported throughout by a squad that had pace everywhere and ran in 24 tries in just four games, eight to them to centre Aaron Warren.

Pontypridd had made the final with a 28-17 win over Aberavon with Rhys Shellard and Dafydd Lockyer to the fore but were never in the hunt against Llandovery .

The Drovers beat the 2013 champions Pontypridd with an ease that few could have predicted with the long-legged Warren flying home with a hat-trick of tries, Ponty’s only reply a try from Shellard.

Fly half Thomas their new and exciting signing from Cardiff Blues chipped in with two tries whilst North Walian wing Aron Evans and prop and skipper Matthew Jacobs got the others.

Thomas and prop Rhodri Jones kicked five conversions between them and there were major contributions throughout from bobby dazzling scrum half Lee Rees and hooker Tom Ball.

Team Manager Andrew Thomas summed things up accurately.

“When you have four odr five the squad capable of running the length of the pitch to score, you know that it will take a good side to beat us.” said Thomas

“And throw in great defence which conceded just four tries all day you have the right mix for success.”

Their second squad got to the semi-final of the Aberaeron 7sbefore losing out to Ponty Butchers 21-19 in controversial circumstance with the last kick of the game.
