League Two West

Hendy 29 Amman United 28

Following two previous defeats, Hendy managed to hang on to claim a maiden victory against a young Amman United side in an entertaining encounter.

A number of injuries, some sustained in their opening defeat to Tycroes last week, saw Amman chop and change at various positions – one of the changes saw Dan Jones give a good performance at an unaccustomed second row berth.

The visitors probably had the best of the first half, with the better chances and some good territory and possession.

Amman’s pack dominated early on, bossing the scrummages with the front-row of Rhys Samuel, Doug Jenkins and Phil Saunders solid.

Behind the scrum, Gavin Lewis was good in attack and defence at full back.

The visitors earned a fully-deserved 17-15 interval advantage after creating some good openings, rewarded with a try apiece for winger Chris Phillips and Jones.

But United’s Achilles Heel of giving away far too many silly penalties raised its ugly head yet again as their indiscipline allowed Hendy back into the game, particularly in the second half, where Amman lost their shape.

Injury also disrupted the visitors, who lost the impressive Jones, possibly for some weeks.

Replacement Lee Thomas did well on his introduction, but the home side largely dominated the second half, aided by Amman errors, to allow them to rack up the tries and penalties and edge a narrow win.

Amman’s only consolation for their efforts was a second losing bonus point.

United welcome early League Two West leaders Aberystwyth to Cwmaman Park on Saturday, with the seasiders having claimed three wins out of three, including full bonus points.
