Llansawel 14 Llandybie 48

Llandybie travelled to Llansawel expecting a hard game and were not disappointed as the hosts got off to a good start.

Llandybie proved slow to the breakdowns in the early exchanges and the hosts drew first blood with two early penalties by Tomos Rees.

Runs by Lyndon Davies and Nathaniel Butler put the visitors on the front foot and from a scrum, Llansawel were caught offside and Aled Tomasson slotted the penalty to reduce the arrears.

A good drive then saw Rhydian Jones dive over to give Llandybie the lead.

More good forward play saw Butler go over in the corner with Tomasson adding the conversion.

Just before half-time, Llansawel were again caught offside and Tomasson’s boot extended the visitors’ lead to 18–6.

From the restart Llandybie were caught offside and Rees again kicked the goal, but within minutes Llansawel were penalised for holding in the tackle and Tomasson slotted the points.

A brilliant line break out of defence by Lyndon Davies, supported by Mike Tench, saw Butler sprinting in from 30 yards for a great score, converted by Tomasson.

When a Richard Davies defensive kick made 30 yards, Connor Thomas gave chase and intercepted a wild pass to canter in unopposed. Again Tomasson added the extras.

In a bruising encounter, Llandybie’s back row of Davies, Jones and Butler were outstanding as was second row Merlyn McClelland. Layton Davies was sound under the high ball at kick offs and the visitors tackling was ferocious.

Llansawel had not given up however and when Llandybie picked up a yellow card for being offside at a tap penalty, home flanker Meirion George, a former Llandybie youth player, got the touchdown.

Llandybie were stirred into action and moved further ahead with a penalty from full back Dafydd Nicholas .

Lyndon Davies and Mathew Meredith went close and centre Rob Smith and Rhydian Jones made strong forward runs before the relentless pressure gave Butler his third try.

Llandybie put together one last good cross field move with Tom Griffith putting Thomas clear to score his second try.

Next week Llandybie host Neyland in the Swalec Bowl.
