A Glynhir golfer enjoyed notable success at the recent Welsh Ladies Seniors Open Championship at Porthmadog Golf Club.

Cathryn Thomas won the Marriner Brigg Trophy for the Best 18 hole Net score for the two rounds of the Golfing Union of Wales championship.

She came T20 overall on the gross score, 12th best of the Welsh entries, beating the legendary Vivien Saunders on her gross score.

The field included 70 players from all over Wales, England and Europe. Her score of 70 was the lowest net score over the two days

Porthmadog golf course is delightfully scenic but challenging links Par 72 course, which overlooks the Morfa Bychan Beach.

With the Porthmadog wind showing its teeth throughout the two days, the competition standard scratch for both rounds was 75, making Cathryn’s net 70 all the more impressive.

Cathryn, who was Glynhir Goff Club’s 2014 Lady Captain. began playing while teaching in Ysgol Glan Clwyd in North Wales, and now plays off a handicap of 11, despite being down as low as six at one stage.

“Lack of time and injury has not allowed me to maintain that standard but it’s great to know it is still there despite now being a Senior,” she said.

Golf is a game for all ages, and there are more and more opportunities for women or girls who would like to “have a go at golf!.

The Golfing Union of Wales is keen to encourage more women and girls to take up the sport and has organised free initial lessons with Bruce Porter, Glynhir’s resident professional.

Cathryn has enjoyed plenty of sporting success over the years, having excelled in many sports including, Badminton, Hockey, Cricket and Rounders.

She is a Scarlets season ticket holder, and a member of the Scarlets Choir who will be preparing for the World Cup Codi Canu challenge on S4C which will be seen on our screens in the next few weeks.
