League Cup - Round Two

Cardiff Corinthians 2

Ammanford 4

Ammanford needed extra time to beat Cardiff Corinthians 4-2 and earn passage into the third round of the League Cup on Saturday, writes Nick Davies.

In a cagey opening period, it was the hosts who went closest first, as a header rattled the bar before being cleared by Mathew Harding.

On 15 minutes, Kurtis Morgan played in Craig Frater who turned and fired a venomous half volley goalward only for the Corries keeper to save the effort.

Frater then lobbed the keeper on 18 minutes, but his effort sailed over.

But, on 27 minutes, the striker finally got the better of him as he tapped home after the goalkeeper made a mess of a back pass.

However, just four minutes later, Corries fired back when the ball fell nicely for their forward to level.

Before the break, Frater saw another effort brilliantly tipped over when he was squared in after an electric dart down the right flank by Owen James.

After the interval, James saw his own effort, destined for the top corner, tipped round the post.

The home side eventually began to take control on proceedings, pressing Ammanford onto the back foot and on 65 minutes, a cross come shot fell just wide of the goal.

Ammanford made some changes with Mikey Morris replacing James. His first impact came soon after; the winger rounded the goalkeeper, but he could only fire over from a tight angle.

Frater then thought he had put his side ahead when he slotted home a deflected pass, but the frontman was ruled out for offside.

Minutes later, Ammanford fell behind as the hosts fired themselves ahead from a freekick.

But, in the dying embers of normal time, Frater curled home a free kick to send the game into extra-time.

On 96 minutes, Morris put his side ahead as he controlled a Frater cross before firing into the bottom corner.

Frater grabbed his hat-trick on 104 minutes, when he ran onto a Mathew Jones pass and coolly slotted past the keeper, taking Ammanford into the next round.
