League 2 West Central

Brynaman 30

Ystradgynlais 10

AFTER three Saturdays of inactivity due to the weather, Brynaman finally found themselves back in action as they entertained second-placed Ystradgynlais in a meeting of two of the league's best sides.

Despite the recent conditions, the surface at Parc y Gwter Fawr appeared immaculate.

All the pre-match talk had been of Ystrad's superb back line and well-drilled pack, but on the day the visitors were no match to the Greens, who were happy to welcome Dafydd Hopkins, Sion Slyman and Gethyn Bugler back into the starting 15 after lengthy absences.

Ystrad started the brighter and their early pressure saw them claimed a 3-0 lead.

The score appeared to fire up the hosts and from the kick off the aggressive home pack turned over the ball. Some strong carries from the man of the match Clive Llewelyn, Bugler and Hopkins enabled Jonny Bevan to power home under the sticks to swing the advantage Brynaman's way. Outside-half Rhys Williams converted.

Brynaman turned on the power at the scrum, putting the visitors on the back foot, and earning the Greens a penalty which Williams duly converted.

Further carries from the Greens' pack saw Gareth Drewson creating an opening to allow Luc Rees to cut through the Ystrad centres to go under the sticks once again.

Williams again added the extras to give the hosts a 17-3 half-time lead.

Ystrad came out of the blocks far quicker after the break and grabbed a quick try as the hosts failed to focus after the restart.

The score proved a wake-up call however and the home fornt eight went rampaging once again, and home pressure at the scrum enabled Williams to slot over another three-pointer.

The visitors' discipline began to suffer, to their cost, and a series of searing forward drives and a neat backs' move created a try for chief Greens poacher Osian Sullivan to cross out wide.

Brynaman went searching for the bonus point score but from the kick-off Dan Page fumbled.

The green pack maintained the pressure however and turned over at the scrum.

The resulting kick downfield was followed up with another series of forward carries before the mercurial Rhys Williams was able to cross for the bonus point try.

The win, which saw the hosts leapfrog the visitors into second, was undoubtedly Brynaman's best team performance of the season and they will to carry on the good form when they travel to mid-table Penlan on Saturday.

Ystrad host struggling Cwmgors who currently sit bottom of the table.
