Elliot Smith scored the late winner on Saturday as Cwmamman United beat Ynystawe Athletic 4-3 at Grenig Park in the Macron West Wales Premier League.

In the 76th minute, Smith, the league’s top goal scorer, made a run from the halfway line to latch onto a pass from Matt Coley, before rounding the keeper and igniting celebration among the Cwmamman supporters.

Cwmamman started the game on the front foot when captain Charlie Davies converted a controversial penalty in the 28th minute and they continued to create chances with Cam Williams, Ryan Cole, Jackson Bereton and Taylor Smith linking up well in midfield.

However, the home team were punished for missing a couple of chances and went 2-1 down in the space of two minutes due to goals from Ynystawe’s Ryan Gibbons and Kyle Jenkins, who scored a sensational overhead kick.

Ynystawe continued their momentum in the first ten minutes of the second half, but in the 56th minute Cole equalised for Cwmamman, seven minutes before Coley pounced on a keeper rebound to put his side back in front to make it 3-2.

Despite a brilliant save by Callum Andrews, the away team responded again though as Gibbons bagged his second goal of the game with a great run through the Cwmamman defence to level the scoring 3-3.

Cwmamman’s defence held strong for the remaining 15 minutes of the match and, ensuring they claimed their twelfth win of the season.

Overall, Cwmamman vs Ynystawe was a highly entertaining spectacle with both teams playing attacking football from the beginning of the match.

Cwmamman’s centre-back pairing of James Gorman and Davies were kept busy throughout, especially as Ynystawe attackers were restricting the usual support play from wing backs Harrison Thomas and Evan Gibbs.

Cwmamman registered a second consecutive victory over Ynystawe following another thrilling match that took place one week ago, which ended 3-2.

On Saturday Cwmamman will face table-toppers Evans & Williams at Grenig Park at 2:30pm as they attempt to close the points gap on Penlan AFC, Clydach and Rockspur Fuds.

Meanwhile, Ynystawe will attempt to bounce back from their fifth defeat in the league when they play Cwm Wanderers away.
