An Ammanford school is in the final of a science and engineering competition.

Ysgol Dyffryn Aman is one of the national finalists in this year’s Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition.

The finalists are showcasing projects including a renewable theme park model using wind, solar and kinetic energy along with other remarkable projects like a portable pollution monitor, a robodog, and smart food storage containers.

Winners at the fair win a prize of £1,000 and stand a chance to be crowned as UK Young Engineer and UK Young Scientist. This year, a new category, UK Young Technologist of the Year is being introduced and is being sponsored by Siemens.

Mark Wood, social sustainability lead, Siemens, UK and Ireland, said: "The Big Bang Competition is a great initiative to bring the brightest young minds together to solve the challenges of tomorrow.

"It is fantastic we now have the UK Young Technologist of the Year award alongside the UK Scientist and UK Engineer of the Year as this recognises the importance of digital skills and technology in all of our lives and our futures."

He also mentioned that technology will play a crucial role in solving current and future challenges.

In addition to Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, several other Welsh secondary schools have made the finals, including Fitzalan High School in Cardiff, Hawarden High School in Flintshire, Lewis Girls Comprehensive in Hengoed, Olchfa School in Swansea and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern in Cardiff.

Phil McShane, associate director of the Big Bang programme, commented on the competition: "This year we’ve had hundreds of young people enter more than 300 projects into the competition and the standard of the projects has been really high.

"The Big Bang Competition judges were extremely impressed with the creativity and innovation shown to solve real-world challenges demonstrated by all the young people who participated."

The winners of The Big Bang Competition will be announced on June 19, the first day of the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham. The fair, the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK, runs until 21 June.

There are limited tickets available for schools wishing to attend the fair on Friday, June 21. The event will include inspirational talks, interactive workshops, and hands-on exhibits and careers information from STEM professionals.
